Sleeping (literally) With A Cop

Sleep. The experience is different for everyone. Some go to bed as early as they can, some love to take naps, some stay up really late, some think they can sleep when they're dead. I personally have never really been a sleeper. I stay up late, I have a million things running through my head, once I wake up I'm up and naps are out of the question.

You would think the fact that I have a 7 month old would be the biggest hindrance to my sleeping time. You'd be wrong. Not to brag, but my girl sleeps like a champ. 5ohBaby has been sleeping about 10-12 hours since we moved her to her own room at week 6. I give every single bit of credit to her sound machine that plays the sound of the ocean all night long. Seriously, if you don't have one, get one immediately!

Don't hate me because I promise my sleep is still interrupted by 5ohHubby. Being married to a cop has it's own set of issues, and I knew that, but I never really realized how different sleeping would be. I've already asked you about police readjusting sleep to fit the families needs (PS 5ohHubby is startled awake much earlier lovingly wakes up early to join our family's schedule on his first day off). I never wake him up on the days he works and he actually goes into a pretty deep sleep which is awesome for him.

We use some tricks to let him sleep on his work days. He also uses a sound machine on the days he's working so 5ohBaby and I don't have to be quiet in the house at all. 5ohPup rarely barks but when she does he can't hear her over the sound, either. We also use the blackout curtains which keep quite a bit of light out of the room. And I tell you what, it might not be pretty but that sleep mask works wonders.

My sleep is always interrupted when he works. Every night I wake up when he is supposed to be home and either hear him come in or check my texts to see if he is going to be late. He is really good about texting me when he is not going to be home on time because he knows I am liable to freak out and call all the local hospitals worry.

But the biggest sleep interruption is when he acts out his dreams. And not the fun kind.

The other morning I was lying in bed, cuddled up with 5ohHubby, enjoying the last few minutes of rest I would be getting. I could hear 5ohBaby begin to stir on her monitor. I was laying there thinking about how much God has blessed me when suddenly 5ohHubby springs into action. He had his arm around me and all of a sudden he was in cop mode and going "hands on". He was gabbing my hand as if he was wrestling with a suspect he was trying to handcuff. I immediately was trying to wake him up "5ohHubby... its just me! Stop it! I'm not resisting haha!".

He stopped and got up on one arm. He peeled up his eye masked and squinted at me. "Go to bed boosest (I know gag, right?) it was just a dream." He looked at me for a few seconds more and then laid right back down and was zonked out. Absolutely no recollection in the morning.  I know this happens to other wives, too. Has something like this ever happened to you?

  2. Similar things happen to me & my boyfriend, too. He will sometimes talk in his sleep, and has occasionally acted out his dreams, including pointing at "things" and telling me to look at what is happening, or sitting straight up in bed and yelling because he thinks someone is in the apartment, etc. He is embarrassed when he does or says anything in his sleep, but I think it's funny and try to reassure him that it's normal.

  5. To answer your question, yes!! The Cop dreams are frequent! Oh and speaking from experience the title of this post will land you many hits on Google keyword searches. Apparently sleeping with a cop is popular topic to search for. :) Ain't we lucky gals!

  7. Occasionally on patrol Husband would holler in his sleep, but for the most part he sleeps quite easily. I'm the "bad dream" person and have scared the crud out of him screaming in my sleep.

One thing we've never had is the "hyper-cop" syndrome where I have to "wake him from across the room" because he'll go all Billy-bad-ass on me. I don't know anything that happens to either, but I hear tell it all the time in blogdom. I'm thankful for missing that one.

  10. I was awoken from my sleep by my hubby giving me CPR (chest compressions) in his sleep...
We have so many stories of the things he says/does in his sleep, it is a regular joke in our house! I tease him that the only safe way to wake him up is to stand outside the bedroom and call his cell phone, because who knows how he will act out if you touch him.
