Our (Perfectly Simple) Christmas

We had a perfectly quiet, perfectly simple, perfectly lovely Christmas this year with just us... just this little 5ohFamily. It was perfectly imperfect and I wouldn't have changed it for the world.

First and foremost, I prepped 5ohHubby's most favorite Christmas food (cinnamon rolls) and my most favorite Christmas food (breakfast casserole). I knew I wouldn't be able to decide between our two traditions!

We kicked off Christmas Eve with a 3pm Christmas Eve church service. We go to a everyone-wears-jeans kinda church which is totally weird for this southern girl but on Christmas Eve I thought it was appropriate for the fam to dress up. I mean, come on, it's just too adorable.
There was a live nativity scene (with a camel!) and a fun little Christmas Town set up in the children's ministry area. They took pictures of our family, had a ton of fun Christmas crafts, and even had a little free! sweet shoppe. It was fun and 5ohBig loved it. We went home and had our traditional Christmas Pasta and then bundled up the fam and headed out to check out Christmas lights. We all had hot chocolate or warm chocolate in 5ohBig's case and stumbled upon a fun neighborhood with a light show. 5ohBig just loved it!
When we got home we put her to bed and then 5ohHubby turned on A Christmas Story. We watched the movie, set up a few big gifts, wrapped all the rest of the gifts and were in bed by 10:45pm. Not too shabby. And if that wasn't lovely enough, 5ohBig let us sleep until nearly 8am, which is big happenings in this house. We of course did our traditional walking-out-with-a-blanket-over-the-kid's-eyes thing.
She had no idea what was going on at first. Then she just wanted to play with the unwrapped toys. We facetimed my family and opened her gifts from them. Then we watched them open ours. Then we called 5ohHubby's family and opened her gifts from them. Thank you technology for letting it feel like family was here. Then we paused for cinnamon rolls and I put the breakfast casserole in the oven.
We spent the next hour slowly sipping our tea and coffee and opening our gifts. It was so nice to be able to soak up the morning. It was just the 3 of us and we were in no rush. We assembled as we opened. 5ohBig was so excited and seemed to enjoy each gift. There was no rush to the next toy or the next gift. Just a simple, easy, quiet morning.

It was beautiful.
We spent the rest of the day watching Christmas movies, making a totally hideous gingerbread house, and baking even worse and more hideous but ridiculously delicious chocolate chip cookies. 5ohBig played with her new toys and refused to nap. I blame all the sugar. None of us got out of our pajamas. We had leftover cinnamon rolls Christmas Pasta for dinner. We put 5ohBaby to bed on time and then spent the evening watching a sappy chick flick (because 5ohHubby just straight up rocks my world).

It was wonderful and simple and perfect. How was your Christmas?

  2. Sounds like an awesome day! We have church at 8am on Christmas day... so no sleep in and no pj's - though they both sound wonderful!

  5. Merry Christmas! That definitely sounds like a festive and low-key Christmas. We did the same and couldn't be happier that Skype exists. :)
